USPA NEWS - Born in the 1970s, I am proud to be part of Generation X, and as the world entered the 1980s, it became apparent that this decade would be the most iconic in music history. This sentiment echoed across various genres, with many believing that the music industry would never experience another decade as groundbreaking. For me, Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA was a life-changing album, while Fleetwood Mac's Rumours was also particularly significant. Today, we will dive into the unprecedented popularity of the Fleetwood Mac 1977, Rumors album.

Upon its release, the album sparked widespread acclaim from critics, who celebrated its exceptional production quality and the captivating vocal harmonies of the band's three singers, and earned the prestigious Album of the Year award at the 1978 Grammy Awards. Over time, Rumours has continued to inspire and influence, solidifying its reputation as Fleetwood Mac's masterpiece and one of the most iconic albums in history, with inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003 and the National Recording Registry in 2017, as well as a ranking of seventh in Rolling Stone's list of the top 500 albums. In 2004, Rumours received a remastered re-release, augmented by the inclusion of "Silver Springs" and outtakes from the original recording sessions.

Rumours became the band's first number-one album on the UK Albums Chart and also reached the top of the U.S. Billboard 200. The album received multi-platinum certifications in several countries, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As of February 2023, Rumours had sold over 40 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. All four of its singles, Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don't Stop, and You Make Loving Fun reached the top 10 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, with "Dreams" reaching number one.

Many attribute the unprecedented success of the Rumours album, impart to the scandals within the band of which members never completely recovered from. The recording sessions occurred amidst the band members' personal breakups with one and other, and struggles with heavy drug use, which significantly impacted the album's direction and lyrics. When many fans read between the lines of more than one of the tracks lyrics, it was quickly concluded that some of the songs were directed between bandmates. It is ironic how the creative differences, affairs, grudges, and other vices eventually tore the band apart, yet contributed to the major success of the album. Fans were intrigued by the drama.
